Ever since we moved to Orange County around a month ago, my husband and I have been looking forward to starting an herb garden on our patio. I love using fresh herbs in my cooking, some of my favorites include Rosemary, Basil, Oregano, and Lavender. In Newport Beach there is this wonderful garden center called “Roger’s Gardens“, which has a vast selection of fresh herbs, and also fresh vegetable plants. The entire property is set up in such a regal and fashionable way, with so many beautiful and well maintained plants and flowers. They also have a floral center which specializes in providing arrangements for events and also professional landscape design.
Being from Arizona, where most plants typically can’t survive outside (unless they are drought-resistant), and the only real garden centers exist at Home Depot and Lowe’s, Roger’s Gardens is like a fantasyland where plants and flowers come alive! I’ve never seen so many floral options all in one place. Also, their prices are very reasonable, particularly because they keep all of their inventory in the best condition, and their plants are stored outside at all times, where they can get adequate sunshine and natural water.
The only thing missing from Roger’s Gardens is a selection of natural seeds or seedlings (for replanting), and also any selection of tools, potting soils, or pots and planters. But I can see how the main draw of Roger’s Gardens is to artistically showcase the plants in their natural setting. If I want seeds or seedlings, I guess I will have to go to Home Depot for that. I don’t really have much confidence in my green thumb, in terms of growing herbs from seeds, and I don’t have any prior experience in that- but maybe I can start with something really basic, and see if it grows!
When I went to Roger’s Gardens today, they also had some wonderful Halloween and Christmas exhibits set up. There is an entire Christmas Shop, which is around 5-6 full rooms of ornaments, decorations, pre-lit trees, wreathes, stationary, entertaining and paper products, and specialty holiday floral arrangements. Also, for the fall season there is an exquisite selection of pumpkins in all sizes, which were looking incredibly orange and ripe.
In my first visit to Roger’s Garden’s I left with a Rosemary and Basil plant. If I had more than two hands, (or the next time I can drag my husband over there), I want to get some lavender and mint plants.
There is a recipe for lavender risotto that has been calling my name for several years now, but I never had anywhere nearby that had fresh lavender! So the prospect of being able to make that one day in the near future is very exciting!
For now, I am excited to use some fresh basil on my pasta tonight. It will almost be like going out to eat. I’m so classy.
